Is There an Ontario EV Charger Rebate in 2026?

EV Chargers · October 23, 2026

We supply and install CSA-approved Level 2 chargers for homes across Toronto and the GTA. One of the first questions we hear is whether there's an Ontario EV charger rebate to help with the cost.

The short answer: as of October 23, 2026, we could find no current provincial home charger rebate in Ontario. This Guide explains what we checked, what programs do exist, and how you can keep charging costs down instead.

The Short Answer, as of October 2026

As of October 23, 2026, the Ontario government's official sources show no current provincial home charger rebate. If you've searched "ev charger rebate ontario" or "home ev charger rebate ontario," that's the honest picture today.

Programs change, so check the official sources listed near the end of this Guide before you plan around any incentive. We can't promise anyone a rebate, and we won't.

What Happened to Ontario's EV Incentives?

Ontario used to offer incentives for electric vehicles and for charging stations. They were funded through the province's cap-and-trade program.

When Ontario ended cap and trade in July 2018, the province cancelled those programs as well. Its Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Incentive Program and its Workplace Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program were both cancelled that month, according to the Environmental Registry of Ontario. No provincial replacement for home chargers has been announced since.

Federal Programs: Vehicles and Shared Charging, Not Home Chargers

There are federal programs, but none of them is a level 2 charger rebate for an Ontario home.

  • iZEV (closed). Transport Canada's Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles program was a point-of-sale incentive on eligible vehicles. Transport Canada says it closed on March 31, 2025.
  • EVAP (vehicles only). Transport Canada's Electric Vehicle Affordability Program offers point-of-sale incentives on eligible new EVs bought or leased from February 16, 2026, subject to funding. It applies to the vehicle, not to a home charger. Ask your dealer whether a vehicle qualifies.
  • ZEVIP (not for single homes). Natural Resources Canada's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program funds charging in public places, workplaces, fleets and larger multi-unit residential buildings. Eligible recipients are organizations, not individuals, and NRCan currently lists its intakes as closed for applications.

If you live in a condo, talk to your condo corporation or building manager about shared charging. That's where programs like ZEVIP have applied in the past.

What About Utility Programs?

Toronto Hydro's Offers and rebates page, as of October 23, 2026, doesn't list a home EV charger rebate. It does point Toronto homeowners to the City of Toronto's Home Energy Loan Program, which lists electric vehicle charging stations among eligible improvements. That's financing to be repaid, not a rebate, so check the City's page for current terms.

If another utility serves you, check its website or call it directly. Utility offers can start and end at any time.

How to Lower Your Home Charging Costs Instead

With no current provincial home charger rebate, the bigger lever is when you charge. The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) sets household electricity prices, and its Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) plan has its lowest price from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. every day.

A Level 2 charger with scheduling makes it easy to plug in after work and let charging wait until the overnight hours. ULO also has a high weekday on-peak price, though, and the OEB says there's no guarantee you'll save by switching. Our Ultra-Low Overnight Guide explains the prices and how to switch with Toronto Hydro.

What a Level 2 Charger Install Involves

Installing a Level 2 charger is a job for a licensed electrician. A typical install includes:

  • Panel capacity check. We look at your electrical panel and existing loads. If your panel is near its limit, a panel upgrade may be needed first.
  • Dedicated circuit. A Level 2 charger usually needs its own 240-volt circuit and breaker.
  • ESA permit. We take out the ESA permit and arrange the inspection.

Toronto Hydro also recommends working with a Licensed Electrical Contractor to assess your home's capacity before you install a charger. Our ESA permit Guide explains why the permit matters.
